Chislehurst Caves

The affluent commuter belt of Chislehurst is not the most likely location for a huge complex of caves that date back over 4000 years.

The caves became more widely known after their use during the Second World War as an air-raid shelter, not only for the locals but for over 10,000 Londoners who travelled to the caves each night by special train. Things were so well organized that people could pay 1p per night for a bunk and there was also a cinema, church and hospital for them to use during their time underground.

The caves are thought to be entirely man made and were created during three different periods of time by our ancestors. The oldest section is thought to be 4000 years old and is called Druids. The largest section was created during the time of the Romans, some 2000 years ago while the youngest section to be excavated was about 1,400 years ago by the Saxons. Some of the passages linking different sections together might be as young as 200 years old. The reason for all the excavation was chalk which was used for agriculture and building.

Guided tours of the caves are regularly held and well organised. Please note that under 16's must be accompanied by an adult. The caves are a very short walk from Chislehurst station but there is parking on site.
